I have Cerebral Palsy and am creating truly wheelchair accessible holiday accommodation in Australia for people of all ages with permanent and/or temporary mobility restrictions.
For people, without disabilities, the chance for the long-awaited annual break to unwind at the ultimate relaxing holiday location of their choice just takes one or two phone calls to arrange. Though for many of the people with disabilities or with mobility restrictions achieving the same outcome is often met with stress and frustration of trying to find accessible destinations and experiences.
In theory, the adventure of travel and experiencing different places should be fun and just a matter of making a few phone calls to compare prices. Though for those with disabilities and with mobility restrictions, even the mundane aspects of holiday planning cannot be taken for granted.
Just imagine you have paid a travel agent for a weekend on the coast after explaining that you require disabled facilities. Then you ring the property to book an extra night only to be told that they have your booking though they do not have an accessible room. Or perhaps you can access the room facilities but you have to go down to the ground level each time you want to go to the toilet.
These are just a few examples of the day-to-day experiences of people with disabilities or with mobility restrictions who try to work, play and participate in the community, but can’t because of inadequate access to holiday accommodation.
One way to overcome these difficulties other than just giving up in frustration is to book the same place that you know is accessible in six to eight months advance.
I believe there is an extreme shortage of accessible holiday accommodation for people with disabilities, therefore, I would like to provide stress-free holidays for everyone and to broaden their holiday locations
Although there are a few available compiled lists of suitable holiday accommodation for people with disabilities or with mobility restrictions, they are often incomplete or not credible. My vision for this project is to provide and manage multiple properties around Australia which are truly accessible for people with disabilities or with mobility restrictions.
